Hey!!! I’m Julie Harvey, and I’m a personal trainer, and online coach who helps people achieve their health and fitness goals, including physique development, fat loss, lifestyle change, specific sporting and performance goals, and nutrition coaching. My client base contains a cross section of amazing people, from all different walks of life, with different backgrounds, training histories, barriers, goals and motivators and I pride myself on the very close working relationship and understanding I have of them as individuals, and what they need from me as their guide.
ABOUT ME AND MY COACHING
I was a frontline tactical support police officer for 12 years, so always had an interest in keeping fit, healthy and most importantly strong but had to figure out how to stay consistent alongside rotating shifts, high stress levels, and different working environments. When my husband, and fellow gym-going police officer; was diagnosed with untreatable skin cancer, we were gifted time with by our employer, and during this palliative care period, I put any and every extra minute outside of caring for my husband, or training, into educating myself and diving more into my true passion of health and fitness, particularly bodybuilding. I stayed on top of my own training and diet, and knew how important it was that I stayed consistent with this, despite the high stress and multiple barriers.
After returning to work post funeral, I decided to follow my passion for fitness, and helping others in a more positive environment! I didn’t even care about taking a pay cut, I just had a new appreciation for how short and precious life is, and I just wanted to engineer a way that I could be in the gym environment all the time!
My first year as a self-employed personal trainer was a whirlwind and I felt unprepared when I completed my level 3 PT qualification. I spent hours, and thousands of pounds, on education and was always hungry to learn more, and conquer my imposter syndrome. Having trained for 10 years already, and more recently deciding to compete in bodybuilding, I was very lucky being approached by new clients at my gym. In under a year I grew my client base to over fortyfive clients and have retained and continue to work with them all to this day. I work with an even split of men and women across a broad age range, with different abilities and schedules. I’ve worked with many Cross-Fit enthusiasts, some people who were completely brand new to the gym environment, and have clients who had imbalances, recurring injuries and mobility issues. I understand the value of accountability having been under different coaches myself, and I know what I found helpful, and what didn’t work for me.
While with the M10 Complete coaching academy, I spent 12 months completing studies in Nutrition, Female Physiology and Biomechanics. I have completed the J3University level 1 complete course, along with their advanced hypertrophy, and female module. I personally have a love for physique development and bodybuilding, but have helped many people more concerned with just health and/or strength, or specific performance progressions. I am level 3 Pre and Post Natal qualified to help new and expecting mothers with their goals, and am currently an undergraduate for a level 5 diploma in advanced sport nutrition with Mac Nutrition University, due to graduate in Nov 2025.
I’ve helped improve the health of clients going through peri-menopause, hypothalamic amenorrhea and severe depression. I have achieved two competition placings (silver and gold) with a Cross-fit client who approached me for help with strength and conditioning and I wouldn’t say I particularly found my Niche yet! For experience, while coaching my own client base online, I worked at a Puregym and Virgin Active to get more exposure to commercial gyms and general population clients; and also spent six months at Loughborough University’s Powerbase gym; one of the top 5 in the UK, once I completed my level 4 in Strength and Conditioning which was a completely new client base for me. There was a mixture of staff and alumni, alongside Olympic athletes and professional sportspersons!
I am currently undergoing a transformation journey of my own, making my stage debut in Women’s Physique in October 24 and believe that coaches should walk the walk! I value modelling behaviour highly, but my highest value is quality of service for my clients, and I am proud to say I never mastered sales and marketing because I never had to! All new clients were from referrals from my current base, or friends and ex colleagues, which is why I want to do everything I can to serve them. I am not into cold calls, churning out marketing content or chasing leads and I believe that putting all of my efforts into serving my base is a much better model than trying to chase numbers and money, as the long term retention has worked out better, but I will always keep a spot for my base members and work with them until they are ready to go it alone. I keep a cap on my client base to manage my own work-life balance; something which has probably been the biggest struggle since starting out!
After Service Delivery; Continuous Professional Development is my second highest value and something extremely important to me. I am always reviewing the most up to date and recent research; challenging and updating my own existing knowledge and biases and this has been really reinforced in a positive way since becoming a Mac Nutrition University Undergraduate, which places a sole emphasis on evidence-based research. I take pride in my work, and like to reinforce my learning by educating my clients, making sure that they understand why my guidance is important, and not just what to do.
THE COACHING PROCESS
As someone still fairly young in the industry, naturally I am still working through my systems and software, but I predominantly use the following process to onboard and manage clients. First I send a detailed Type-Form questionnaire which goes into depth about everything I need to know to gain a good understanding of where you are currently at, and where you want to get to, with anything relevant that could help or hinder your progress to your goals. Once I receive your form back, I may schedule a virtual meeting to clarify or discuss your form, or we may just exchange a couple of emails if there are just a few small queries I have. If I feel confident that I can help you, I will set you up on my online platform called Kahunas, to take your first three months of coaching fees up front and get to work on your bespoke programme. If your goals/ timelines seem unhealthy or unrealistic, I will come back to you to discuss this first.
A huge amount of work with each individual client, is front-loaded in this onboarding process, which is why I ask for a minimum of twelve weeks commitment, not only to cover costs for my time and administration, but also to give yourself time to really start to see results! After your initial three-month period, the payments will automatically move to the single regular online monthly fee for the next month, until you cancel. All payments are automated via Stripe from Kahunas. Kahunas is an app which allows you to view and log all of your workouts, nutrition, progress and I like to track metrics on there depending on your goals and progress. It is also the platform used for your weekly check in, which is a fundamental part of the online coaching process. Outside of your check in, you can contact me via WhatsApp between 08:00-20:00 Mon-Sat for any support, questions, clarifications or help that you may need. Outside of these hours I ask that you only contact for urgent queries or updates.
As your programme is presented in line with my Five-Star service standards, and due to the amount of detail I like to provide tailored specifically to you and your goals, the turnaround time between receiving your type form reply and onboarding you onto the system ready to go, can sometimes take up to three days, but I always endeavour to be as prompt as possible. Between now and becoming a client, I actively encourage you to start gathering as much data as possible for me, including your nutrition intake (even if it’s just a food diary on paper!), daily step count and activity levels, body weight, sleep habits, and it would help if you can take photographs and measurements of your physique for me as soon as possible, first thing in the morning, fasted, wearing underwear. Measurements of your waist in particular would be the minimum requirement, but I am a keen data gatherer and the more information you can provide me, the better! It is also very helpful if you can gather an equipment list for your gym/gyms, if applicable, so that your training regime is relevant to you. The brand and variations of machines is also quite relevant if you are a member of any gym with multiple options.
Because this process is online only, it is very important that you train according to the video library I have created within the app, and pay close attention to the instructions on each movement and how to execute them safely, with good form. If you are unsure I would rather you send me form-check videos with very light weights to ensure that you are performing the exercise safely, prior to trying to figure it out on your own and risk injury! If you have mobility or movement issues it is important that his is highlighted to me BEFORE I set up your programme, and we may have to go through a movement assessment on a virtual meeting so that I can understand and see your limitations.
MY COACHING
I like to constantly review my service and stress the importance of good communication and an honest relationship, with regular feedback. If something isn’t working, it is very important that we address it for you and it is my job to make the programme fit your lifestyle and not the other way around. I am quite a soft coach, but if you need me to be quite harsh and hold you accountable, please tell me this is what you need. I like to provide information and education and empower you to make life-long, sustainable habits, but I understand that some clients need regular ongoing accountability and interference to ensure that they stay on track. I am constantly learning and developing but if you feel you have a particular psychology or need around the coaching process, please communicate this to me.
It is imperative that you understand that you are not just buying results. I am with you every step of the way, but you are doing this for yourself, and it is YOU who has to commit to my guidance and follow what I lay out as consistently as possible to get to your goals. The more time that you can invest into the programme and yourself, the more efficiently you will get to your goals but I will work with your schedule and what is realistic and sustainable for you and your lifestyle.
